2017 Festival

Dec 8th: Dimenna Center Benzaquen Hall ( 450 37th St. NY, NY 10018) 2F

Nick Yulman will fill the DiMenna Center’s Benzaquen Hall with  Song Installation, an array of digitally controlled mechanical instruments, creating an immersive listening environment for listeners to explore. These musical automata will accompany disembodied voices emanating from radios, and perform a musical program that ranges from tightly choreographed pop songs to textural soundscapes that move around the room like shifting weather patterns.

 

 

 

 

 

Please note that all participants are asked to come one hour before show time (7PM) to set up and rehearse. We hope you can join us!

For the festival’s third event, performers Margaret Leng Tan, Tristan McKay, Adam Tendler, Alexa Dexa and Phyllis Chen take the stage to showcase a variety of compelling works that incorporate mechanical musical instruments with live performers. From metronomes, Fisher-Price record players and hacked music boxes, the event surrounds the 2017 leading performer, the Robot Toy Piano, with other fellow automotoys.

As a nod to the festival’s initial inspiration, the night will close with the infamous (and rarely heard) work by John Cage,  Amplified Toy Pianos performed by Adam Tendler, Tristan McKay and Phyllis Chen.

As part of ICE‘s residency at the Abrons Arts Center, UnCaged Toy Piano presents the winning works from the UnCaged::Conlon Keyboard Prize featuring works for the 2017 featured performer, the Robot Toy Piano (built by Ranjit Bhatnagar.) The program includes works for live-coding pianist by Anne Veinberg/Felipe Ignacio Noriega (winners of the the 2017 Keyboard Prize), Keychain by Christina Oorebeek for toy piano, robot toy piano and disklavier, and PRAGMA by UnCaged runner-up Stefano Alessandretti for robot toy piano and live-electronics.

The evening will also feature an exciting collaboration with the fifth grade robotics students at  Manhattan’s Ethical Culture Fieldston School.  Under the instruction of Lan Heng and in collaboration with the music department (Phillip Bettencourt, Angela Dixon) , Alex Peh and Phyllis Chen, the fifth grade class will present a Robot Music Ensemble performing a new work especially designed for the occasion.
